Saint Emilion – not just wine
Saint Emilion is beautiful beyond the wine … but the wine is certainly excellent. It is, what I would say, the quint essential France location. Essentially the main streets of this medieval city are pedestrian only. Go figure as some of them would not be wide enough for a vehicle. They mostly offer the traditional cobblestone streets. The combination of cobblestone and inclines might suggest you not do too much wine tasting. A bit of a challenge there, since there are numerous opportunities to taste and purchase some wine.
Around this small city is more wine opportunities with the many vineyards. Some offer tours, other may be bed and breakfasts, but just driving through the country side is beautiful. Years ago we had a tour of Chateau Tour Grand Faurie. Their Grand Cru has become our favourite but not quite an everyday priced wine. More recently, as pictured in the slide show, they had a shop right in town.
Where to stay
Hotels in town and bed and breakfasts at various vineyards are a couple of the options for your stay. Our go to place is the Chateau Hotel and Spa Grand Barrail. It is just west of the town and a very short drive. Château Grand Barrail is more upscale but it does offer a very relaxing environment, which, if you are driving, you may need after dealing with the somewhat speedy French drivers. You can also enjoy a bottle of their wine, perhaps with a wonderful meal at their Gourmet restaurant.
